SCOTTISH WOMEN’S BEER GROUPS COLLABORATE ON 2025 INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY PROJECT.
Edinburgh based beer appreciation group Women in Beer UK and Glasgow’s Glasladies Beer Society have come together to brew with Moonwake Beer Co. to celebrate International Women’s Day 2025.
The collaboration is part of International Women’s Collaboration Brew Day (IWCBD), a worldwide event that was founded in 2014 by Sophie de Ronde, Head Brewer at Burnt Mill Brewery. In 2024 the campaign was taken on by the team at Women On Tap CIC.
The brew day saw around 30 women from all walks of life gathering at Moonwake’s brewery in Leith for a hands-on experience of understanding the brewing process, learning about the industry through panel discussions and workshops, and networking and making new friends.
Participants included students from Heriot Watt University’s Brewing and Distilling Programme. “Networking is so vital to our industry”, said Rachel Sutherland, Director of Studies & Assistant Professor, Brewing. “It's always a pleasure to encourage our students to meet and interact on days like this, and to highlight the vital role that women play in our industry. Currently only around 1% of professional brewers are women, but we have around 20% on our programmes and these kinds of events definitely help this number to keep rising."
It was the first time Moonwake Beer Co. had taken part in the IWCBD project. Golnar Mattot, Brand Ambassador at Moonwake said, “To host so many inspiring women as part of IWCBD was a real honour. There was a lot of knowledge and creativity in the brewery that day and the Lotus Salvo IPA is a great testament to all of the goodwill and energy the collaborators brought to the project. A big part of what I do at Moonwake is about making real life connections with the people who drink our beers.”
Nix Prabhu, Founder of the Glasladies Beer Society felt that the day had exceeded expectations on every level. “It’s always so special to find yourself in the company of amazing women, all of whom are inspiring in their own way. Projects like IWCBD are important as they serve as a reminder to the community that women are very much part of the beer industry, both as producers as well as consumers, and the smart brands are the ones that make note of this when bringing their beers to market.”
Women in Beer UK Founder Amelie Tassin has been involved with the IWCBD project for some years now and adds, "IWCBD is always an important moment in the year for us. Getting together to brew beers, learn from each other, and foster connections, that’s what International Women’s Day should be all about. We were over the moon to see so many women taking part this year again, we can’t wait to try the beer now!"
The collab brew is scheduled for release in April, with the official launch in Edinburgh on Wednesday, 9 April at The Southern and in Glasgow on Friday, 11 April at Grunting Growler. Both events are open to all members of the public and everyone is welcome to attend.
In addition, the beer will be pouring at several other locations in both cities making for an interesting pub trail.
Part of the proceeds from sales will be donated to the Women In Beer Mentorship Programme that provides practical assistance to career development of women in the industry, and also to Tea in the Pot, a Glasgow charity that provides support and companionship to women.
Lotus Salvo IPA will be available for purchase from Moonwake’s online store and at a number of indie bottle shops across the UK.
